On the Internet, just like in the real world, when you interact with customers your sales increase. One of the great things about a well designed site is that you can interact with hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of people at the same time in many different ways. And, this can be automated, for the most part with infobots and auto-responders to provide instant response with the appearance of personalized attention. Let’s look at what can be done to make your site interactive and how and why each will benefit your site.

One obvious reason for having a dynamic "interactive" site is that they are much more interesting than a static site. Therefore visitors tend to stay around longer. The longer they stay around the more familiar they become with you and your company. People must be comfortable with your company before they will buy from you. Additionally, when a surfer finds an interesting site they are more likely to tell a friend thus increasing your traffic. Making it easy for them to pass on your URL with a Tell a friend about this Site link or form adds to your sites interactivity. A plus being that since a "friend" is passing the information on about your site it helps to build your credibility. Credibility translates into more sales!

People who are surfing on the Internet are looking for information. You should provide plenty of free useful content that can be retrieved in a variety of formats. For example: a free downloadable report, this should contain plenty of links back to areas in your site with additional related and helpful information. Mailto links and fill in forms should abound on your site, so visitors can immediately have additional information sent to them. These could be for sales promotions, events, special offers, or a newsletter. All handled by infobots and auto-responders to the delight of the visitor who receives their reply in 2 minutes or less. (Example: Only those using this link will receive these little known but highly successful insiders secrets. With another link you can offer to answer questions or give advice, the difference here is that you need to take the time to personally respond to this type of mail. Customers LOVE it!

Use a fill-in (form field) box instead of or in addition to a mailto link when offering your newsletter or other material. Form field boxes have a much higher response than mailto links. Place this on your home page and repeat it throughout your site.

Contests are a great way to drive people to your site and to keep them coming back. Many people love to play contests and the interactive nature really gets them involved with your website. To keep your traffic focussed make sure your contest is related to the subject of your website. Make it fun and be creative, but don’t make it too complicated. It should be simple to play, and the rules should be easy to understand.

Bulletin/Discussion boards are a great way to get people really involved with your site and on a regular basis. Allowing them to post questions or comments and interact with you and others gives them a sense of community and helps to establish rapport.  Encourage them to invite their friends and associates to join in and contribute. Let them know that the forum is their community and encourage them to give feedback, and help to decide what is most important in the way of focus, content, tools, topics etc. You will need to check the board frequently (at the very least daily) to moderate and respond. There is nothing wrong with having a few friends post questions or opinions at first, just to "get the ball rolling."

Offer to give FREE advice once or twice a week or even daily via your site’s online chatroom. Simply advertise, on your site and elsewhere, the topic(s) you will be discussing and the time(s) you will be giving away your valuable advice for FREE!

Ask visitors their opinion. People love to "put their two cents in." Give them the opportunity by asking them what they think of your articles, products, services, or anything relative. (Tip: Post those really great responses you get.) Ask them to offer suggestions on how you can improve the site, or what they would like to see added to make the site more valuable or useful to them.

Buying is an emotional response. People have to be able to feel that they will benefit from purchasing your product or service. Get people involved in your site and bring them into your world. Show them how your product or service will benefit them. Get them to visualize how their life will improve once they have bought from you.
